Kirchberg

Kirchberg (Church Hill)

feral saxophones improvise
to iodine and saline herbality

Name

This was once called the “Trischelberg.” In the local dialect, that has hints of both “dry” and “feral” — each very fitting given our own flavor associations with this wine. But life marches to its own drummer. As so often was the case, the clerics eventually had their say, and the vineyard was renamed ‘Kirchberg’ (Church Hill). Given the beauty of both these churches, it's pretty easy to accept.

Facts

Geological definition: Devonian, Ems quartzite. A hard slate with quartzite. The red coloration — iron oxidized into hematite — is an indication of its tropic origins. The sediment accumulated through the entry of fine sands of the Old Red Continent into the primordial ocean. We cultivate one parcel here, totaling 0.5 ha. Orientation: South, elevation 100 - 150 m, slope 100 to 150%, average age of vines: approx. 50 years. Classification: VDP.GROSSE LAGE

The wines are exclusively vinified with wild yeasts in wooden barrels and absolutely no addition of enzymes or fining agents, and age until summer on the lees. Kirchberg wines are produced dry and bear the designation of VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS.

Reviews

"Lively Riesling with incredible depth, enchanting creaminess and a range of wild aromas" FAZ ▄  "Taut and yeasty with hints of tobacco and stone fruit aromas and accents of citrus fruits, dark berries and a deep minerality. Tautly woven, savory fruit notes with vegetal and delicately spicy accents, tremendous earthy-spicy minerality, delicate, lively acidity, good concentration and length, a touch of pepper, plenty of grip, tart and juicy with a spicy finish." wein-plus ▄ "Powerfully spicy and mineral aromas are all I could smell at first. Beneath that onslaught on the nose were some more subtle scents of custard apple, musk and pomme fruits which carried through to the intensely ripe and richly textured palate that was both enjoyable and confronting at the same time due to its power and strength of character.” Boozemonkey.com ▄ "Exceptional depth, intense minerality and spicy aromas reminiscent of candied citrus fruit and dried apple. Tightly woven, deep and juicy, elegant, taut acidity, intense salty minerality and spice on the palate, tremendous power and depth, and a rich aftertaste. Dense, incredibly complex and very, very long. ”  wein-plus ▄ “Épicé, matière somptueuse, finesse étonnante...” La Revue du Vin de Franc
